Pillared Arch Skull Headstone

Architectural detail gives the Pillared Arch Skull Headstone a more formal presence than a simple carved grave marker. The rounded arch rises from a stepped rectangular plinth, with a pair of spiral-carved columns flanking the central recess. Their twisting grooves create strong vertical lines, drawing attention towards the small cross mounted at the apex of the arch.

Within the sheltered alcove, a prominent human skull forms the main decorative feature. The recessed panel contrasts with the projecting pillars and raised stonework, while cracks and worn masonry give the monument the appearance of an old churchyard memorial.
