Gargoyle-Flanked Skull Headstone

Designed for a burial plot of particular significance, the Gargoyle-Flanked Skull Headstone combines gothic architecture with watchful stone guardians. The main slab rises into a pointed arch, crowned by a raised central gable, while a circular moulded medallion frames the human skull at its centre. Pitted surfaces and fine cracks interrupt the formal stonework, suggesting a memorial that has endured generations of harsh weather.

Two miniature gargoyles perch on the upper shoulders of the headstone, one on either side of the central gable. Their compact bodies and folded bat-like wings create small silhouettes against the larger slab, as though they are keeping watch over the grave below. A moulded pedestal supports the monument and gives its base a more finished, substantial appearance.

Aged granite or cool slate grey suits the stonework, with dark washes bringing out the circular medallion, skull features and cracks across the face. Use lighter dry-brushing along the pointed arch, gable and pedestal edges to reveal the raised details. Bone-white highlights can define the skull, while slightly darker shading on the gargoyles helps distinguish them from the surrounding stone.

Place this headstone in a prominent churchyard plot, beside a mausoleum entrance or among the graves of a ruined abbey. Its decorative silhouette makes it a useful centrepiece among simpler memorials and can suggest the resting place of a noble, a feared occultist or a figure protected by ancient magic. The solid stone form also provides visual obstruction in gothic horror skirmishes and adds architectural variety to cemetery dioramas.
